Sponge

Sponge has proven to be one of the Motor City’s heaviest hitters after gaining international notoriety with their debut album “Rotting Piñata” (Sony). Emerging from Detroit with hits like “Plowed” and “Molly (16 Candles)” Sponge received massive airplay on radio stations from coast to coast and were in heavy rotation on MTV. Both “Plowed” and “Molly” hit #5 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Charts, catapulting “Rotting Piñata” to Gold, and ultimately Platinum status.

Sponge’s follow up CD, the critically lauded “Wax Ecstatic” (Columbia) scored additional top ten Billboard hits including “Wax Ecstatic” and “Have You Seen Mary?” The band’s music was also featured in popular movies “The Craft,” “Chasing Amy,” “Mall Rats” and “Empire Records.” Sponge’s star continued to rise with network appearances on “The Late Show with David Letterman” and the “Conan O’Brien Show.”

Sponge’s subsequent releases “New Pop Sunday,” “For All The Drugs in The World,” “The Man,” “Galore Galore,” and “Destroy the Boy,” showcased the band’s swirling sonic attack, rooted in 70’s glam and of course, the Motor City influences of The Stooges, The MC5 and Motown-but still sounding distinctly like no one else.

“Plowed” continues to be the band’s signature rock track, having been spotlighted on Guitar Hero’s “Warriors of Rock – 90’s Rock Track Pack” – and on the Paper Jamz Guitar Series 2, in addition to the soundtrack for the Gerard Butler surf movie “Chasing Mavericks.”

Oliver James

His powerful full-length debut, Chasing The Sun (Wire & Wood Recordings LTD), is an emotionally rich journey with exquisite songcraft, painful realities, and an epically cinematic production aesthetic.

“I called it Chasing The Sun because you simply can never catch the sun, and if you could, you’d melt. So the metaphor represents hopes, dreams, decisions and ramifications,” he says.

Prior to issuing his well-crafted 8-song debut, Oliver tested the waters by releasing the beautifully haunting ballad “Keep Breathing.” The song is a deeply moving tribute to the men and women in the armed services. It is a boldfaced plea for those who place themselves in harm’s way to come home to their loved ones – alive. “Keep Breathing” quickly earned 10,000 radio spins and critical acclaim. Mossip.livejournal.com said: “Keep Breathing’ is the first single from Oliver’s upcoming album, and in short, it is the perfect power ballad.” Yousingiwrite.com praised: “’Keep Breathing’ is complete of emotions. Somber yet hopeful, inspiring and tragic, the music ascends at the most opportune moment and grabs the listener’s undivided attention. With the wishful notion that all soldiers come home alive, a universal concept that many would agree on, James’ debut release is sure to leave a mark.”

Chasing The Sun is boldly sincere with a production aesthetic that is both elegantly restrained and sweepingly grand. Each tune is addressed individually and produced in a way that’s authentic but also tastefully theatrical. The gorgeously somber “Before He Turned The Gun On Himself” has an elegiac 15-piece orchestra and David Letterman’s Late Night Gospel Choir soul-saving backup vocals. The goose bump-inducing pop-rock of “Running Back To You” is lean and muscular, tailored to Oliver’s pristinely urgent vocals with full-bodied guitars and a driving rhythm section.

Fuzz Huzzi

Fuzz Huzzi has been a mainstay of the San Diego music scene since 1994. After a brief hiatus they are back with a fresh line up and new batch of songs. The trend of very personal and emotional lyrics with a high intensity live show for which the band gained renown over the years strives to reach new hights.

The future for Fuzz Huzzi has never looked so bright. With a new release in 2019 and an ever growing live schedule, the band is determined to build on their legacy rather than sit back and simply relive past victories.

Mike and the Moonpies

Mike and the Moonpies is an American country and Americana band based in Austin, Texas. It was formed by singer-songwriter Mike Harmeier in 2007. Its members are Harmeier and drummer Kyle Ponder, guitarist Caitlin Rutherford, bassist Omar Oyoque, and steel guitarist Zachary Moulton.

Ginger Cowgirl

While a taste for many styles of music is evident in Nashville-based band Ginger Cowgirl’s upcoming release, their approach is nevertheless rooted in the tradition of classic country brevity, wit and soul. Throw in some pedal steel, rockin’ telecaster twang, worldly lyrics and front-woman Stacy Antonel’s eclectic vocals, and you have a unique brand of Americana music.

The core of Ginger Cowgirl is California-born Antonel, a vocalist whose range and versatility allow her to sing rock, jazz, soul, pop and country with equal proficiency and passion. She’s a classically trained pianist from the age of 7, holds a degree from UC Berkeley, and got her start in the music industry singing jingles while living in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 2013 she beat out hundreds of singers to win the $10,000 grand prize on Fox’s televised singing competition “3 Minutes to Stardom”.

Ginger Cowgirl is currently finishing up their debut EP at Historic RCA Studio C. After a Spring 2019 release the band will be touring extensively, both at home and abroad.

Sara Petite

Sara Petite is a gritty Pollyanna, Minnie Pearl type Bruce Springsteen rocker with an Outlaw-Classic Country style. Raised in a Tulip farming town in Washington she resides in San Diego, CA. A gifted singer-songwriter who possesses the unique ability to reach the hearts and souls of fans young and old. She has the rare gift to craft songs that appeal equally, but are interpreted differently by fans of diverse perspectives. This comes through in her live performances as well. A true original, ‘s music does not conveniently fit into any one musical genre or sub-category, but rather traces her influences in country, bluegrass, rock and folk, and emerges into a sound completely her own. As welcome in senior citizen centers as she is in biker bars, nightclub venues and festivals, Sara is as American as apple pie and Harley Davidson. She is gritty, she is wild, she is tender with a soul of a child.

Etana

Reggae music has birthed yet another rarity- A spirited and soulful singer/songwriter in the eloquent and enchanted empress Etana. Since recognizing the power of music and widespread influence, singer/songwriter Shauna McKenzie returned to her birthplace Jamaica, after being left with a negative pop industry experience. Adopting the moniker of Etana for it’s powerful meaning “The Strong One” in Swahili; Her strength was manifested this time around by pursuing a musical career on her own terms.

Etana’s elegantly modest Rasta-chic sartorial style is as distinctive as her sound: An audacious fusion of folk, soul, jazz and reggae supporting a powerful vocal range suggestive of the ancestral spirit of South Africa’s Miriam Makeba. The Regality of reggae queen Marcia Griffiths and the soulful verve of Etta James. “I looked at how women were being represented in Jamaican music and how little girls were being influenced negatively by tinder surroundings, I wanted to be a positive influence and change some of the way things that were being taught” Etana Reflected.

Maka Roots

Maka Roots is a veteran in Reggae music who stands firm and true, reverent to the traditional and foundation roots reggae sound and esthetic. His music is original, modern and progressive as well. Along with these vital qualities, his music is heartfelt, with a positive, conscious message. Thought provoking music that pleases the ears and elevates the mind. Music that moves the heart and lifts the spirit. The message is lyrically sharp, potent and relevant. His versatile live set is a balance of styles from the reggae music spectrum. From conscious roots anthems to digi-dancehall style, rebel music to lovers rock, Maka Roots plays it all. Tight and crisp. Melodic, thoughtful and creative. Fierce and driving. Dubwise and bubbling. Executed with precision and heart. Live performances are a refreshing, positive and upful experience. His reputation is solidified as one of San Diego’s top roots reggae artists and is felt wherever he takes the stage.

Demun Jones

DEMUN JONES has always had a way of keeping it real when it comes to the music he has written, recorded and performed throughout his career, but, that said, JONES COUNTY might well be the most genuine collection of songs that represents who the Georgia native is and certainly illustrates the place where he’s lived his entire life.

Asked how the songs for his forthcoming solo project came about, Demun said, “I went out in my front yard and imagined what are they doing? What are they thinking? What are they going to do? What do I see?”

Life in Jones County, which is just north of Macon, is southern and some, including the Jones family, will say they’re rednecks. They drive trucks. They fish and hunt. They like keeping things simple—sort of a what-you-see is what-you-get type of place. All the same, Jones County is what you hear and Demun is hoping people who are from there will respect and love his latest collection of 12 songs, while people who aren’t from around those parts will be “captivated by it and want to listen to it.”

Demun – a nickname he earned at a young age because he was aggressive and energetic – was 10 years old when he was transfixed by the immergence of N.W.A. and how they represented their own hometown. He’s never forgotten how that seminal album affected a southern boy down in Georgia. He’s always wanted to do the same for Jones County.

“I’ve had inspirations that cover the whole gamut of genres,” Demun said.

The Black Lillies

Over the summer of 2017, Americana darlings The Black Lillies launched an experiment … a songwriting challenge for themselves that forced them to be accountable to their fans.

“The Sprinter Sessions” were a series of live videos broadcast via Facebook Live from the back of their Sprinter van while driving down the highway or at stops around the country, from the frozen cityscape of Philadelphia in late winter to the side of a Midwestern backroad with fallow fields stretching to the horizon. In various combinations, the Lillies — founder/songwriter Cruz Contreras, bass player/songwriter Sam Quinn, guitarist/songwriter Dustin Schaefer and drummer/songwriter Bowman Townsend — committed themselves to recording a brand new song every week. They weren’t lavishly orchestrated or fully fleshed out; sometimes lyrics had been written mere minutes prior to the broadcast. The songs were performed on acoustic instruments still grimy from shows the night before, and the guys didn’t bother to pick out their finest threads. Quinn, more often than not, played shirtless.

“You’re putting songs out there that weren’t finished, weren’t perfectly arranged, and we might barely have been able to perform them,” Contreras says. “We might be tired or hungover, playing them at a truck stop or wherever. It wasn’t glamorous — but it held us accountable to that a rate of productivity that was really important, and it kept our fans up to speed with the evolution of the group — even if a lot of them did offer to send us clothes or food!”

More than anything else, “The Sprinter Sessions” set the stage for “Stranger to Me,” their new album. The band’s first since the departure of longtime member Trisha Gene Brady, it has been highly anticipated by fans and members of the media who were curious to hear the “new” Black Lillies. It’s been a slow roll-out, but the new record is the sound of a group that’s been renewed and reinvigorated, anchored to the traditions that made it so beloved by so many but chiseled down to the bare essentials: Four men. Four friends. Four artists, each of whom could rightly put out a solo record tomorrow, tied
together by a bond to something that’s greater than the sum of its parts.
