Leaving Austin

Leaving Austin is the new generation of country music. Don’t let their tattoos, piercings, and skinny jeans fool you. These 5 young guys have the cutting edge to where country music is headed. Leaving Austin consists of members: Austin Machado on lead vocals, Davis Forney on guitar and harmonies, Michael Stevens on bass, Terry Ashford on lead guitar, and Ryan Chin on drums. Born and raised in the central valley of California, growing up on country, pop, and rock n’ roll, they decided it was time to get back to their roots and sing country their way.

Living in the small towns of the Central Valley, everyone just seems to know everyone. Michael, Terry, and Davis grew up playing music at church together in Visalia, CA. One night Davis went to a local venue to watch one of his friends’ band. When he walked in the room to check out the opening band, he heard Austin sing for the first time. “His vocals captured me in disbelief”, says Davis. Austin was then introduced to Davis that night through mutual friends and they hit it off immediately. They started writing music and became best friends within days. As they pursued music, Davis brought Michael and Terry onboard. As they played local shows, the guys heard Ryan’s flawless drumming in their friends’ pop punk band. It was a no-brainer to call him about their new endeavor of pop country. They all decided to get together for a practice session and it was immediately apparent that, when Ryan started playing along with them, this was the dream team.

The Devon Allman Project with Duane Betts

Posted in Classic Rock, Live Music, Rock, Schedule on October 7th, 2018 by Doug

December 7, 2018 · Doors open at 7:00 pm

The Devon Allman Project

Devon Allman, former leader of Honeytribe and the Royal Southern Brotherhood, as well as the son of the late Gregg Allman, will embark on a massive tour with The Devon Allman Project. The Devon Allman Project will be joined by special guest Duane Betts for a 30+ minute encore each night, while Duane will also open each show.

The Devon Allman Project is a sextet that finds Devon joined by percussionists John Lum and R. Scott Bryan as well as bassist Justin Corgan, guitarist Jackson Stokes and organist Nicholas David. Duane’s opening set will find Dickey Betts’ son aided by guitarist Johnny Stachela and Devon’s rhythm section.

Each club/theater show will begin with a 30-minute set from Duane Betts & Co. Then, The Devon Allman Project will play a one-hour set that will include songs from Honeytribe, Royal Southern Brotherhood, The Devon Allman Band and choice covers. As mentioned, the concerts will culminate with all eight musicians joining forces for Allman Brothers tunes and other classics as part of a 30+ minute encore.

Devon Allman

Allman is the son of Gregg Allman (of The Allman Brothers Band) and Shelley Kay Jefts. His parents divorced when he was an infant, and he grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas, as well as Tennessee and St. Louis, Missouri, raised by his mother.

Allman began playing music as a teen, but was not influenced by his father. He did not meet his father until he was in his teens, but they then bonded instantly. For several years in the 1990s he performed around the growing St. Louis blues and rock music scene, while also managing a suburban Guitar Center store where he met his future Royal Southern Brotherhood bandmate, Mike Zito.

In his twenties, Allman tried various musical styles and sounds to distance himself from his father’s sound and avoid obvious comparisons, though his father did not meddle in Allman’s career. In his thirties, Allman embraced the blues and rock genres.

Allman grew up on classic, blues-inspired rock music, and has specifically mentioned Santana, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, and The Allman Brothers Band as influences…

Duane Betts

There is learning and there is knowing. From sit-ins, sessions, and sideman shifts, Duane Betts learned. Then, Duane Betts knew.

As a teen, Betts cut his teeth sitting-in regularly with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees The Allman Brothers Band, led by his father, Dickey Betts. Named by his dad in honor of his late Allman Brothers bandmate, the renowned Duane Allman, this native of Sarasota, Florida relocated to Southern California in the late 1990s, becoming a consummate musician in Malibu rock bands such as Backbone69 and Whitestarr, and sharing the stage with luminaries from Jack Johnson and G. Love to Kid Rock and Phil Lesh.

After 15 years of honing his craft in numerous bands, the Los Angeles-based guitarist, singer, and songwriter knew it was time to take all that he learned and make it his own. Following celebrated stints with folk-rock darlings Dawes, and with Jamtown- a supergroup featuring Love, Donovan Frankenreiter, and Cisco Adler- plus a near-decade stint with his dad Dickey Betts’ post-Allman Brothers Band outfit, Great Southern, it was time to step out from the side of the stage and move to the center.

It was time for Betts’ own six-string stories and impassioned songs portraying a life, and a history, steeped in blues, rock, and country music tradition to be heard.

Duane Betts knew it was time to go solo…

His teenage years were spent in Galena, a rural indian village on the Yukon River, deep in the Alaskan tundra. After 8 years in the U.S. Marines, Gethen landed in Southern California. Returning from Iraq, determined to sing his own song, he found a home in Country Music with his five piece band The Freightshakers (since revamped as Gethen Jenkins). Over the next several years Gethen immersed himself in his music, working hard to create a unique sound keeping true to his roots.

“This hard-driving, honky-tonk group lead by Gethen Jenkins is a perfect way to spend any night, wherever it may take you.” – National Country Review

Guitar Shorty

Guitar Shorty

Legendary guitarist/vocalist Guitar Shorty is a giant in the blues world. Credited with influencing both Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Guy, Guitar Shorty has been electrifying audiences for five decades with his supercharged live shows and his incendiary recordings. Like a bare knuckled boxer, Shorty strikes with his blistering, physical guitar playing and his fierce vocals, connecting directly with body and soul. What really sets Shorty apart is his absolutely unpredictable, off-the-wall guitar playing. He reaches for sounds, riffs and licks that other blues players wouldn’t even think of. Amazon.com says his guitar work “sounds like a caged tiger before feeding time. His molten guitar pours his psychedelicized solos like lava over anything in his path.” The Chicago Reader declares, “Guitar Shorty is a battle-scarred hard-ass. He slices off his phrases and notes with homicidal fury. He is among the highest-energy blues entertainers on the scene.”

Through the years, Shorty has performed with blues and R&B luminaries like Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, B.B. King, Guitar Slim and T-Bone Walker. He started playing with these legends while still in his teens and recorded a handful of singles for a variety of labels and an obscure LP during the first 30 years of his career. After decades of paying his dues (like so many unheralded American bluesmen), it took a tour of England to establish Shorty’s fame in his home country. His recordings since then all received massive critical acclaim, and his renowned live performances have kept him constantly in demand all over the world. His 2004 Alligator Records debut, Watch Your Back, became his best-received, best-selling album to date. His 2006 follow-up, We The People, won the coveted Blues Music Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album Of The Year. Now, with his new CD, Bare Knuckle, Guitar Shorty unleashes a barrage of hard-hitting combinations of guitar, vocals and lyrics, hitting his listeners with some of the most awe-inspiring guitar and vocal work of his long career.

The Ike Willis Project

Ike Willis is an American singer and guitarist who was a regular sideman for Frank Zappa, first joining Zappa’s band for the fall 1978 tour and remaining in the band for several years.

Ike did not tour with Zappa in 1981 and 1982 for personal reasons, but returned to touring with Zappa for his final two tours in 1984 (which Zappa intended at the time to be his final tour) and 1988.

Ike currently tours with several Frank Zappa tribute bands including ZAPPATiKA, Ossi Duri, Project/Object, Pojama People and Ugly Radio Rebellion. He’s also performed several times with the Brazilian Zappa cover band, The Central Scrutinizer Band, The Muffin Men, and with the Italian band Elio e le Storie Tese.
Additionally, he has appeared multiple times at the annual Zappanale festival in Bad Doberan, Germany.

Ike is most recognized for his involvement in Zappa records such as playing Joe in Joe’s Garage, providing vocals on Tinsel Town Rebellion, You Are What You Is, and The Man from Utopia, and as the title character and narrator in Zappa’s off-Broadway-styled conceptual musical Thing-Fish.

Pet Shark

Pet Shark is a progressive rock, instrumental band from Orange County, California featuring and co-founded by Keith Moreland on guitar, and Ted Morton on drums, percussion, keyboards and other various sound effects.

Bass Guitarist Matt Bissonette recorded on the first and second album, but because of his busy recording and touring schedule (with Elton John), he is not able to join the band for the live shows. So they’ve been joined by bass guitarist Russ Reshaw who has been on the road with the band Two or More for the last ten years, playing over 120 dates per year. Russ has also performed with Bobby Kimball, former lead singer of the band Toto. Russ is an amazing bass player, but best of all, he’s a great guy. The band is very pleased to have him.

They are all seasoned professionals both in the studio and at live performances. Collectively, they have played with such musicians as Crystal Lewis, Dennis Agajanian, Darryl Mansfield, John and Anne Barbour, Steve Camp, Terry Clark, Two or More, Bryan Duncan, Bobby Kimball, and countless others.
